Thunderbird House Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba Project Cost: $2,800,000 Completion: 2000 Co-Designer/Project Manager: Bret Cardinal, Prime Consultant: Douglas Cardinal Architect Inc. In the tradition of a single story spiritual centre, the Round House is modeled after a medicine wheel and is circular in form. The outstretched wings of an eagle spread over the roof of the building to acknowledge the four Cardinal directions. A natural, wood-burning, fire pit is at the centre of the ceremonial space which functions as the heart of Neeginan Round House. All interior functions circulate around this space; in particular a ‘drum-like’ wood-spring floor for dancing and ceremonies, which is surrounded by a ring of natural wood columns. Other functions include a kitchen, bathrooms, activity rooms, offices and conference rooms. |
